Latpanchar-Mahananda-Neora Valley, West Bengal

Rufous-Necked Hornbill
Rufous-Necked Hornbill

The northern part of West Bengal is covered with mountains and hills and it has a very different geography if we compare with the other parts of this state. Once you land at Siliguri(Bagdogra) Airport, you’ll start to observe that you’ve landed in a different state altogether.

Taking a 2 hours journey from the Airport towards Latpanchar will make you reach to the place where you can see so many different species of birds. Due to gaining height, the vegetation changes and it builds a home for so many wonderful birds including visitors like Mrs. Gould’s Sunbird, Sultan Tit, Collared Falconet, Rufous-bellied Eagle and ofcourse the Rufous-necked Hornbill, which is the only place to see this species in India.

Then, further ahead of Latpanhar is Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary and some more places which one can cover. Target species includes Great Hornbill, Red-headed

Red-headed Trogon

Trogon, Streaked-Spiderhunter, Sapphire Flycatcher, various types of Yuhinas, Snowy-browed Flycatcher and ofcourse Black Baza.

After this, we’ll take you to Neora Valley (Lava), where we’ll gain more height and the habitat will change completely. This is the place where one can see Satyr Tragopan, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Golden-throated

Scarlet Finch

Barbet, Scarlet Finch, many types of bull finches, parrotbills, bulbuls, Red Crossbill and so many other birds. If you’re lucky, you might be able to see Red Panda too.

How to reach:

One can take a flight till Siliguri (Bagdogra) and then all destinations will be covered in a taxi. There are trains also available but we would recommend a flight journey as it saves time, costs almost equal (ex. Delhi), and also, one can see the mighty Mount Everest in the plane journey.

How many days one should plan for?

One can easily cover all locations in 6-7 days, but for Bird Enthusiasts, we would recommend you a 10 days trip, so that you can cover the maximum species in a trip.
