Sometimes you don’t choose a location for travel, but the location chooses you to be one of the visitors… Cliché enough? Well, it’s because when you find a location which is perfect in every aspect for Birding, you always wonder how to even explain the beauty of that place. Bahu is one such place where you can stay for months (literally) and you would never feel like leaving this place.

Well, most of the people from Birding world doesn’t know about this location. Bahu is a small town in Kullu District of Himachal Pradesh. It’s roughly half an hour drive from Jibhi. This place is at a height of 2400 meters and one can witness snow covered peaks throughout the year which is a part of Great Himalyan National Park. Also, Bahu and near by areas combined form the buffer zone for the National Park too. So, one might get lucky and sight some mammals too.I was lucky to visit this place with my travel buddy Ashutosh. We went to Bahu in November. Since, our friend’s husband was living there, he planned our stay and places to visit for birding. We took an evening bus from Delhi and reached Aut, HP on the next morning. From this point, we took a taxi till Bahu (one can take a shared taxi too but need to wait for the time). So, for the first 2 days, we did birding in Bahu and vicinity. We spotted many species especially Himalayan Buzzard, Long legged buzzard, Blue frontend redstart, Pink browed rose finch to name a few.

On the third day, we went to Jhalori Pass which is a 2 hours drive from Bahu. It’s at around 3100 meters height. We spotted the elusive Bearded Vulture, Water Pipit, harrier, Grey crested tit, Plain mountain finch etc.

It was the fourth and the last day of our trip and we decided to go to Jibhi (1700m height). We did some low altitude birding and we were able to spot a lot of species including Little fork tail, Spotted fork tail, Yellow bellied fantail, green backed tit, Khalij Pheasant, Bar Tailed tree creeper and many more.

We took a taxi from Jibhi at 6PM and reached the Aut tunnel in an hour from where we boarded the bus for Delhi. With some awesome memories of birds, hikes and views, we added a new chapter of travelling in our lives.
